    SUMMARY: Coordinates as well as performs student Nurse work in the District. Assesses students requiring the direct services of a nurse. Provides health care for involved students and assists in the implementation of required health care procedures.
    EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
    BA in Nursing and valid RN License from the State of Illinois to practice as a Nurse required. Must be willing to take additional coursework to comply with ISBE requirements for a school nurse.
    PEL with a Certified School Nurse endorsement required.
    Three years of experience in school nursing and supervisory experience preferred.
    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES. Other duties may be assigned.
    • Coordinates district-wide health services.
    • Organizes health information to be distributed to parents and explains policies and procedures.
    • Works with Nurses to ensure state surveys are compiled and that information is complete and accurate.
    • Up-dates Health Office Procedure Manual and makes necessary changes when approved by administration.
    • Works with principals as part of the interviewing team for nurse positions.
    • Orients new nurses. Provides for subs as needed.
    • Provides guidance in developing health care plans.
    • Completes requisitions for health care equipment and supplies.
    • Organizes community-based health services.
    • Observes students on a regular basis to detect health needs.
    • Works with teachers and staff on screening students for health problems.
    • Administers and keeps records of issuance of medication as prescribed by physicians.
    • Assists with parent conferences as needed and as they pertain to health care services.
    • Acts as a liaison between physicians, parents, and staff.
    • Communicates with parents, school personnel, physicians, clinics, and other agencies on student health matters.
    • Administers first aid in accordance with established first aid procedures and district policy.
    • Implements board policy on exclusion and readmission of students in connection with infectious and contagious diseases.
    • Facilitates training for students related to handicap, health, and hygiene.
    • Assists school personnel in maintaining sanitary standards in schools.
    • Conducts annual training on blood-borne pathogens.
    • Works with the staff to provide a safe and secure school environment.
    • Participates in screening and referral services.
    • Maintains the medical alert list, susceptible list, and health problems list.
    • Monitors required medical trainings that is required by the Illinois State Board of Education and health departments.
    • Works as a team member to meet the needs of inclusion students.
    • Orders supplies and equipment needed to maintain nurse's office.
    • Assumes responsibility for the care of a student or staff member who has suffered an illness, injury, or emergency medical issue during school hours.
    • Obtains and maintains professional certification for vision, hearing and CPR.
    • Prepares state and local reports.
    • Performs related duties as required.

    Knowledge of:
    Principles of supervision
    Principles of Nursing as School Nurse.
    Basic concepts of Education.
    Modern Nursing Practice.
    Modern office equipment including PC and related software.
    Community based health programs.
    Record keeping, report writing, and filing of mandated reports.
    Ability to:
    Recruit, train and supervise registered nurses.
    Keep complete and accurate records and write mandated reports.
    Apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional program.
    Plan & implement lessons based on division & school objectives & the needs & abilities of students to whom assigned.
    Establish and maintain effective working relationships.
    Speak clear and concisely in written or oral communication.
    English LANGUAGE SKILLS:
    Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
    MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
    Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
    REASONING ABILITY:
    Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee will occasionally sit, walk, or stand. The employee will occasionally reach forward or above the head more than the average person. Ability to visit various buildings in the district. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move and push up to 50 pounds such as students and students in wheelchairs. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and depth perception.
    WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The employee is frequently exposed to infection at a greater risk than the average person. The employee is directly responsible for the safety, well-being of students.
